ESSENTIAL QUESTION(S): How is a salad produced?
FOCUS: Students will produce a salad and discover how those ingredients were produced for this food item to fully understand where their food comes from and the nutritional value it provides their bodies.
40-YEAR LEARNING: Salads can be a healthy food option and artistically prepared for humans.

LEVEL 1 - ABOUT SALADS

Students will understand the basic components of a salad. 
  • TASK 1.1 - In your notebooks, you will complete the "MAGNET" word association activity with your instructor. Write "Salads" in the center of a new page of your notebook.
  • TASK 1.2 - Draw and color a magnet below that word.
  • TASK 1.3 - With your table partners, write down various terms associated with "salad" around the word. 
  • TASK 1.4 - Your instructor will capture each group's results on the board. If you missed anything, please write them down during the activity.
  • TASK 1.5 - Are Salads Healthy? Take a look at this blog about the history and "Americanizing" of today's salads. In your notebooks, please write down the title "Are Salads Healthy?" Please write down inferences you gathered from this reading. We will share them as a table group and then as a class with your instructor writing down the important information on the board for everyone to gather in their notes.

LEVEL 2 - PREPARING A SALAD

Students will safely prepare a salad product for consumption.
  • TASK 2.1 - Watch how your instructor prepares a salad.
    • Ingredient Options: lettuce, tomatoes, nuts, cheeses, fruits, proteins, dressings
  • TASK 2.2 - Make your own salad with your group members.
  • TASK 2.3 - Watch these videos with your instructor as you consume your salads today. Reflect upon how your salad was farmed. What are 5 new things you learned about this food product. Youtube has many educational videos that have been produced that translate how our food is produced, gardening tips, commercial farming visits, processing visits, and chefs along with foodies that share their culinary passions.

  • TASK 3.1 - Each student will select country and present a salad from this country.
  • TASK 3.2 - Put your Salads on this shared presentation. You title the slide with your name, country and salad name. You need a photo, and list of ingredients. ASSIGNMENT
